The survey on the characteristics of emissions from gasoline vehicles & the smoke tests by derived representative driving patterns in Taiwan, R.O.C.

Absrtact
The fundamental data of the total vehicular pollutant emission estimations are based on the statistics of traffic volume of the main roads and the emission test procedures specified in the vehicular emission standards in Taiwan. The investigation of driving pattern, moreover, is tested by the type of vehicle-by-vehicle on the representative roads in Taiwan, which is to understand the characteristic of local driving patterns and to estimate the relations and differences between the driving patterns in statute and in this project. This project will discuss the vehicular pollutant emissions and characteristics and also recommend the control strategies for the emissions from gasoline vehicles in Taiwan. Compared with the driving pattern in statute(FTP-75), the number of acceleration-deceleration change within one driving period and time proportions of idling status are more in the driving pattern established in this poject, though the time proportion of cruising and travel speed were not. And the proportion of the speed below 30km/h in all speed categories of local driving pattern is above 50%. These results above on driving pattern will influence the vehicular pollutant emissions further. The vehicular pollutant emissions in local driving pattern are higher (1.1~1.8 times) than that of FTP-75, and therefore, it seems that it’s necessary to adjust the driving patterns in statute. To improve the air quality, this project, based on the results above, recommends 3 tiers’ control strategies for emission standard, I/M enforcement and fuel quality.
